The Greene County Rams baseball team went 0-4 last week as the season end draws near, now sitting at 1-17 overall and 1-12 in Heart of Iowa Conference play.
The Rams hosted Saydel Monday, June 24, falling 8-1. Greene County was the first of the two teams to score, putting one runner across home plate in the second inning, but let go of the lead in the third when Saydel scored twice.
There were six singles knocked by the Rams, with Camden Jacobs hitting two and one each from Gavyn Winters, Nathan Towers, Jaron Jacobs and Lane Fields. Jacobs reached on an error, his other two at bats. Fourteen Rams struck out.
Only one error was committed by the Rams, who successfully put out 21 runners. Nathan Towers and Teagan Chisholm were on the mound, giving up 10 hits and five walks with two hit batters and striking out four.
The Rams were back at home Tuesday, this time facing Southeast Valley and falling 9-3. The Rams led 3-0 going into the fifth inning but couldn’t hold their lead as the Jaguars rallied, scoring seven runs in the fifth inning. The four Ram hits were all singles with Crew Conner responsible for three and Camden Jacobs knocking one. Noah Hinote found two walks, Gavyn Winters one. Adam Bills and Lane Fields were both hit by pitches. There were three Ram strikeouts.
Winters and Hinote took the mound, allowing eight hits and eight walks, fanning nine batters. The defense saw 20 putouts and three errors on 31 total chances.
Greene County traveled to Perry last Wednesday where the Bluejays secured a 1-0 win over the Rams. Both teams were scoreless until the fifth inning when the Bluejays sent one runner across the plate. The four Ram hits included a double and a single belted by Conner, and a single each from Bills and Jacobs. Hinote drew a walk and Jacobs advanced after being hit by a pitch.
Conner allowed seven hits with one run, one walk and one strikeout. The Rams committed two errors on 26 total chances.
Thursday was a 12-0 loss to the 31-1 West Marshall Trojans who led the night early and relentlessly. The Trojan pitchers worked the mound hard, allowing no Ram hits and just one hit batter with nine strikeouts. Conner was the unlucky Ram taking a base after being hit by a pitch, but was left stranded. There were six errors from the Rams. Jacobs and Fields combined on the mound for five hits, six walks, three hit batters and five strikeouts.
The Rams hosted 3-14 Glidden-Ralston on July 1 and won 3-1. A game scheduled Tuesday in Manson against Manson-Northwest Webster was cancelled due to weather and will not be rescheduled.
The team will host Winterset on Monday, July 8, and Humboldt on Tuesday, July 9. The Rams will travel to North Polk High School on Friday, July 12, to face the 19-5 home team in the first round of 3A District play.
